A road trip in your motorhome through North Brabant

Want to wake up with a nature reserve in your front garden? A city tour from a municipal campsite? There’s plenty of choice for a holiday or weekend break in your motorhome in North Brabant. You can discover the most unusual spots in the province from campsites and motorhome sites.

This motorhome route through North Brabant will take you on a journey at your own pace from unconventional Tilburg to the fortified town of Heusden. You can cycle through the Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park, stroll through the capital city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and follow in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh to Nuenen.

Day 1. On the right track in Tilburg

You can camp in style in an unconventional city such as Tilburg. You will park up in the middle of the Spoorpark at the motorhome pitches of the Tilburg municipal campsite. In the middle of Tilburg, but still so peaceful! Take a look at the Spoorzone (Railway Zone) where the old railway sheds are now the setting for exhibitions, street art and cool restaurants. Enjoy street food from the Gourmet Market Central Station or take your seat in Eetbar de Wagon, where you can dine in an old railway carriage.

Time to check out the countryside! Start the day off at the top of the Kempentoren tower, right next to the motorhome site. You can look out over the Spoorzone from a height of 35 metres. Then it’s a half hour drive in your motorhome to the Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park.

You can have a delicious lunch and rent mountain bikes for an exhilarating ride through the National Park at the Herberg De Drie Linden restaurant. You can also buy your mandatory MTB (mountain bike) vignette here. If you prefer to walk, follow the TOP Nature Route Loon and Drunen Dunes from De Rustende Jager restaurant.

Go to sleep tonight at the motorhome site in Heusden. You will be sleeping next to the water, with views of the historic fortified town. A complete walking tour of the town can wait till the next day, but be sure to visit the garrison town for the most delicious pancakes at De Pannekoekenbakker.

Day 3. Heusden fortified town

The lively Vismarkt (Fish Market) is a great place for a coffee and a treat or for a good lunch.

Take some time this morning to explore this historic garrison. The first stop is at Bakkertje Deeg for a delicious sandwich, this bakery is a household name in Heusden! A walk along the cobblestones and ramparts will take you past historic gates, bastions and charming alleyways with studios and unusual boutiques.

When you’ve seen enough, continue your road trip in your motorhome through North Brabant towards ‘s-Hertogenbosch. It’s only a 2 kilometre walk or bike ride from Camperplaats Den Bosch to the centre. Which icons from Den Bosch are not to be missed? St. John’s Cathedral, the Tramkade, atmospheric Uilenburg and of course the authentic Bossche Bol pastry.

Day 4. Natural, historic Vught

You can go for a lovely morning walk in ‘s-Hertogenbosch at the Moerputten. This is a beautiful nature reserve, famous for its photogenic old railway bridge across the peat marshes. You can park your motorhome at the park entrance.

The next stop is Vught. The compelling stories from the Second World War are right among the natural surroundings of Vught. You can follow the Liberation Route Brabant from Fort Isabella, a 40 kilometre cycle route following the trail of the liberators. On the way you will pass Camp Vught National Monument, a thought-provoking stop.

You can stay overnight at De Groene Donk mini campsite, just a 10-minute drive from Vught.

Day 5. The good life in Brabant

Castles, country estates and fresh home-grown Brabant produce; you can enjoy the good life during your holiday or road trip in North Brabant. Today this will begin at nearby Heeswijk Castle. Discover the history of the elite life of Brabant or go for a lovely walk through the estate.

Lunch or dinner will be an experience if you visit De Noordkade in Veghel, a ten-minute drive from the castle. This hundred-year-old cattle feed factory has been transformed into a popular food and cultural hotspot with delicatessens, exhibitions and specialists who distil gin, roast coffee and create music. Enjoy a delicious beer among the silos at De Vleeghel City Brewery or maybe go for a culinary experience at a height of 32 metres at Sillyfox. You will find traces of the industrial past in the maze of corridors and staircases.

Day 6. In the footsteps of Van Gogh

A motorhome trip past North Brabant’s icons is not complete without being introduced to the most famous person to come from Brabant: Vincent van Gogh. It’s a short drive from Croy to Nuenen, the place where Van Gogh painted his first real masterpiece, The Potato Eaters.

Nowhere can you experience the Brabant which so inspired Van Gogh as in the rural surroundings of Nuenen. Start the day at the Van Gogh Village Museum, where you go on a journey through his life. Follow that with the Van Gogh Walking Route (10 km) through beautiful countryside and past unusual Van Gogh heritage locations.

Round off your road trip through Brabant in style with dinner at the iconic Watermolen van Opwetten watermill. It was a favourite subject for Van Gogh and is nowadays the place to enjoy authentic gastronomy in the picturesque Brabant countryside.
