Born in Rotterdam, I grew up in North Brabant and, after a few detours via Zwolle and The Hague, I’ve been back on Brabant soil for years now. I love travelling, but what I really enjoy most is exploring. I’m always on the lookout for special places with a good story behind them, preferably ones where the locals themselves hang out. I enjoy spending time with my children and friends, or heading out into nature with my dog, Manu.

I live in Oosterhout, near Breda and the Biesbosch. What do I love so much about Brabant? The mix of lively towns, beautiful countryside and places where you can enjoy a lovely meal and a drink. And it’s all so close together. To me, Brabant often feels like a holiday – right on my doorstep!

My tips for your visit to North Brabant:

It’s lovely to wander through the charming little streets, discover unique boutiques in the Veemarktkwartier and settle down on a terrace. For a good glass of wine, I like to go to Bardot, and at Jongens van Zand & Klei they show just how surprisingly delicious potatoes can be. Highly recommended! On summer’s days, I enjoy the Valkenbergpark and the terrace at the T Huis.

Nature is always close by here, too. The Mastbos is a lovely place to walk the dog – there’s even an off-leash area! – and for anyone who fancies exploring Breda in a different way, I’d recommend a stand-up paddleboarding trip along the canals.

My tips for nature lovers and bon vivants

  • The Holy Triangle in Oosterhout. One of my absolute favourites. Three remarkable convents, lovely walking routes and delicious local produce. At De Blauwe Camer, you can sample dishes made from the sisters’ vegetable garden and locally grown wine. Sitting amongst the vines in summer, it’s just like being in France! And don’t forget the delicious cheese from De Driehoek Dairy Farm.
  • The Vrachelse Heide and the woods near Dorst. I love to go for walks or mountain bike rides here. The MTB trail links the Vrachelse Heide, Hannebroek and the woods of Dorst. Combine your trip with lunch at Natuurpoort Bos & Co or an artisan ice cream at IJsboerderij Jacobushoeve.
  • De Biesbosch National Park. Water and nature – a wonderful combination! You can explore this special area from Drimmelen or Werkendam. My tip: hire a canoe or kayak from Jachthaven Oversteeg and set off on your own adventure. You’ll experience the Biesbosch at its most beautiful from the water.
