Welcome to Zundert, Vincent van Gogh’s birthplace. From his home soil, you wander past places from his youth. You go to surprising, intimate places where, as a child, the artist walked with his parents, brothers and sisters, where he played with all kinds of creatures and made drawings of them. Where he fantasised and dreamt about later, about what he would become. But you also go to places that in Van Gogh’s time were still vast rye fields and where a new park-like landscape flourishes today. And you see streets of which the names are reminiscent of Van Gogh’s sketches and paintings. How great is that!

Story of the route
At the location of the current Vincent van Gogh House (1) once stood the former rectory of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation. The original house where Vincent was born was demolished in 1903.
His birth was recorded at the Zundert Townhall (2). Little Vincent briefly followed education at the village school, which was diagonally across from the residential home, Markt 2.
Vincent’s godmothers, the Van de Burgh sisters, lived at Markt 25 (3). He went there regularly. On this spot, the building has been reconstructed as it was in Van Gogh’s time. And as such it has retained its historic appearance.
On the Van Gogh Square, the statue, ‘Vincent en Theo’ (5) by artist Ossip Zadkine reminds us of the strong bond between Vincent and his brother.
The church (4) originally belonged to the Netherlands Reformed Congregation and dates from 1805. Vincent’s father was the minister here from 1849 to 1871. The graveyard (6) is the resting place of Vincent’s stillborn brother. This silent place must have made quite an impression on him.
The former Sexton’s House (7) has been in use as the Van Gogh Gallery since 2008. The kitchen garden was behind the building. The Van Gogh family grew fruit and vegetables there. For the past few years, it has been a studio where artists can work and be inspired by the place where Vincent grew up.
‘De tuintjes’ (the little gardens) is a maze of sandy paths surrounded by beech hedges. Vincent must have walked these paths often. And possibly with a bucket and scoop net, towards the banks of the River Aa of Weerijs, or the Grote Beek (Great Brook).
Vincent caught insects while wandering through this damp area. In his room in the vicarage, he pinned them and added detailed descriptions. Van Gogh greatly admired nature, farmers and craftspeople. Also the craft of the miller.
De Akkermolen (windmill) (11) stood here in Van Gogh’s time.
Via the babbling Kleine Beek (Small Brook) we arrive in Klein-Zundert. Vincent walked here regularly, and we go on towards the Pannenhof nature area. This area is central to the Van Gogh National Park Walk Etten-Leur.
Walking over the old cobblestones by the church, we get to a new area of natural scenery: the Assortimentstuin. In the past, this was developed as a shop window for the Zundert tree cultivators. Together, the garden (a green meeting place in the making) and the Kleine Beek nature zone form the Tuinderij landscape zone, a location where flora and fauna kiss the village centre. In the Tuinderij residential district, street names such as Boomgaard, Spitter and Zaaier refer to Van Gogh’s sketches and paintings.
