This varying route will take you past green fields, historic villages and the bustling activity of the Meierijstad region and surroundings. It’s a great temptation from quayside to kitchen to get off your bike now and then and explore the vicinity. Enjoy a culinary stop at the Proeffabriek (‘Taste factory’) in CHV Noordkade, or Gastronomy with a capital G at Restaurant Wollerich. Follow the route of the Zuid Willemsvaart canal and pick your own vegetables.
Meierijstad is possibly the most enterprising ‘food and feed’ community in Europe. It has a strong agricultural sector with over 700 companies. In addition, industrial Dutch giants such as Jumbo, Sligro, AgriFirm, Friesland Campina, Udea, Mars and Hutten Catering are all based in Meierijstad. Often these are family businesses that have local roots but which have grown internationally. Meierijstad has become an important cradle for the modern food industry, including the Verspillingsfabriek (Waste Factory) expertise centre.
