Helvoirt is located in a rural area in the middle of North Brabant. This little gem, surrounded by beautiful countryside, forms part of the Van Gogh National Park. Father Theodorus van Gogh was the minister of the Protestant church in Helvoirt from 1871-1875, and although Vincent van Gogh never lived in Helvoirt, he visited his family here on many occasions.

This typical Brabant village contains three Van Gogh Monuments: the Reformed parsonage, where the Van Gogh family lived (1871-1875), the old Reformed church (dating from the 15th century and where Vincent’s father was the minister) and the graves of Vincent’s aunt and uncle. The nearby provincial capital of Brabant, ’s-Hertogenbosch, is home to Het Noordbrabants Museum, the only place in Brabant where you can admire original Van Gogh paintings.

About the cycle route (21km)
This cycle route starts at the Vincent van Goghplein square. Visit the three Van Gogh Monuments and discover why Helvoirt was a special place for the Van Gogh family. There is nowhere else where so many members of the Van Gogh family lived (thirteen in all) as in Helvoirt. Once outside the village you can cycle right through the Groene Woud (Green Forest) National Park.

When it’s time for a break, there are plenty of comfortable, friendly places to eat or drink along the way. This route will take you to the edge of the Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park. Recommendation: cycle into the park and be surprised by the ‘Brabant Sahara’. You can make your way back to Helvoirt along the ‘IJzeren Man’ (‘Iron Man’; the longest beach in Brabant) or you can continue on your way along the Van Gogh cycle route ’s-Hertogenbosch.

How does the Van Gogh cycle route work?
The Van Gogh cycle route forms part of the cycle route network in Brabant. There is a Van Gogh cycle route sign at every intersection. Follow the Van Gogh cycle route signs from one numbered intersection to the other. Follow the cycle route network signs between the intersections. Ten short routes in the form of loops have been marked out. The routes are joined together by linking sections.

  • Uncle Johannes van Gogh’s grave
Begin your cycle tour at the Vincent van Goghplein. From there, cycle into the Vincent van Goghstraat. There is a field opposite Vincent van Goghstraat 5 which contains the grave of Johannes van Gogh, the oldest brother of Vincent’s father. To continue the cycle tour keep cycling along the Vincent van Goghstraat which then becomes the De Jonge van Zwijnsbergenstraat. Turn right at the end into the Torenstraat. You can follow the cycle route network from here.

  • Protestant church
As you cycle from the De Jonge van Zwijnsbergenstraat into the Torenstraat, you will see a Protestant church on your left. Vincent made several sketches of this Gothic church in the summer of 1874. Vincent’s father had been the minister here since 1871. The ‘states bible’ that he used is on display in the church.
  •  Reformed rectory
There is a stately white building opposite the Protestant church at Torenstraat 47. It is the Reformed rectory, where Vincent’s parents lived from 1871 to 1875. Vincent stayed at this rectory on several occasions and sketched the Reformed Church where his father was the preacher.

  • Guldenberg Hotel & Brasserie
An official Brabants Fietscafé; a Brabant Bicycle Café. In these bicycle cafés, cyclists are made to feel especially welcome! You can stop by for a delicious bite to eat or a refreshing drink, and make use of facilities such as a repair kit, bicycle pump and e-bike charging station. These bicycle cafés can be recognised by the hexagonal 'Brabants Fietscafé' sticker on the window.
  • The Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park
From junction 76 you can cycle into the Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park. It is one of the largest areas of sand dunes in Western Europe.

  • HelvoirThuis
If you want to find out more about Vincent van Gogh in Helvoirt, visit the Van Gogh information centre in het HelvoirThuis. To get there: between junctions 77 and 78 the cycle route continues along the Kastanjelaan. Turn right by the church into the Kloosterstraat.
