Brabant Monastery Trail Stage 4: Megen - Velp

This walking route allows amblers to discover the area between Megen and Velp. It runs from St Antony of Padua Monastery in Megen to the Emmaus Friary in Velp.

This walking route allows amblers to discover the area between Megen and Velp. It runs from St Antony of Padua Monastery in Megen to the Emmaus Friary in Velp. On the way you will pass various locations such as the church of Saint Lawrence and monastery Soeterbeeck. You can also explore the Garnizoenskerk (garrison church) and the Church of Saint Viktor. Brabant Monastery Trail takes you past around fifty-five monasteries and abbeys in North Brabant in various stages. The total length of the trail is 330 kilometres, but there are also beautiful trails marked out around various monasteries.

Saint John the Baptist Church

Saint John the Baptist has the oldest church tower (11th century) in North Brabant. The tower is made of tuff stone, a material that was transported from hundreds of kilometers away: it was only in 2011 that the tower was first restored.

Monastery Soeterbeeck

The monastic community of Soeterbeeck was founded in 1448 in Nederwetten (near Nuenen). In 1732, the sisters had to flee and bought an estate in Deursen, located in the Free Land of Ravenstein.

Former Monastery Huize Nazareth

House Nazareth (1845) was a branch of Soeterbeeck. In 1922, the Sisters of J.M.J. took over the educational duties. They built a school, a nursing home, and a hospital. In 2006, the sisters left.

Mill De Nijverheid

Mill De Nijverheid is built on the old fortifications of Ravenstein and is the tallest post mill in our country.

Saint-Lucia church

The Luciakerk was built in 1735 on the site where the Jesuit church had been built after the city fire in 1609. This church is special because of the Baroque style, which is very rare in the Netherlands.

Garrison Church Ravenstein

This hall church was built in 1641 for the Reformed worship service for the members of the State Garrison.

Church Sint-Viktor

The church from 1405 had been given over to the Protestants. Because there were very few of them, the church was neglected. In the 19th century, the church collapses after a flood, leaving only the tower standing.

Nature reserve Keent

Keent is a young nature reserve. Keent was once located in Gelderland, but because a meander of the Maas was cut off in 1938, the hamlet of Keent was added to North Brabant.
