If you are interested in cultural-historical heritage combined with active social contact, then the fortified city of Ravenstein is definitely worth a visit. Once a Roman Catholic free state along the Maas, it is now one of the jewels of the municipality of Oss. While sightseeing (with or without a guide), discover the interesting, historic places of interest that Ravenstein has to offer. It has the tallest windmill in North Brabant, a beautiful city garden with a museum, and the oldest defence works in the Netherlands constructed of stone and earth. A ‘day out in Ravenstein’ is just that since, in addition to an impressive heritage, the city also offers various active tours and creative (cooking) workshops.
On Saturdays especially, your nose will most likely get some extra stimulation ...

A Tour through/past Places of Interest
The completely restored flour mill De Nijverheid is one of Ravenstein’s eye-catchers. The former bastion ‘Utrecht’ once had a medieval mill on the same spot. Nowadays, De Nijverheid is home to Bakhuisje (for delicious smelling bread and treats, freshly baked on Saturday) and Wilskracht Stadsbrouwerij (with its local shop), where it is possible to rediscover (and taste!) Ravenstein’s rich history in each craft beer.
The Leerlooierijmuseum or Leather Tanning Museum, located in the amazing city garden, provides information about the 19th-century industrial history of the city. The Philips van Kleef Bolwerck is a defence built in the old Italian style that was rediscovered in 2011 – about five hundred years after its construction – and recreated immediately.

Rich History
Ravenstein was established in 1360 by Walraven van Valkenburg, vassal of the duke of Brabant, who had his castle in Herpen rebuilt in Ravenstein. During the Eighty Years' War, Ravenstein was a safe haven for Roman Catholics, who were allowed to live there and practice their faith in freedom. Thus the genuine hospitality that you feel in all of Ravenstein certainly has a historic component.
Much more information about this rich history, the many places of interest and all other opportunities can be found on the website of the Ravenstein Tourist Information Office.
