The North Brabant Soil project
Night after night, he sat there, sketching, in a dark corner of the thatched cottage that belonged to the De Groot family. While they peeled potatoes, he discovered the shapes, surfaces and contrasts of ‘The Potato Eaters’. It was the smell of those North Brabant farmer’s potatoes that made him realise what it was he wanted to say: “that those folks who were eating their potatoes by dipping their hands into the bowl used those very same hands to plow the earth, ... that they had earned their food honestly.”
Brabant has long tradition of farming. For centuries, this land has been a part of what we eat and how we live. Farmers have a unique connection with North Brabant’s countryside. Vincent not only felt that but also felt the intense value of this: telling of its beauty and the importance of farm life. The North Brabant Soil project (Brabants Bodem) offers agrarian entrepreneurs the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the countryside and the landscape of the Van Gogh National Park. The project collaborates with local farmers to maintain a green, valuable and future-proof landscape. This allows agriculture to harmonise with the interests of society. Farmers and the local community are joining forces to form an innovative partnership to make the Van Gogh National Park more beautiful and sustainable.

In May 1884 Vincent worked on a number of paintings of mills. He painted the watermill at Kollen that he passed when walking from Nuenen to Eindhoven.
