On 15 September 1866, Vincent van Gogh who was then thirteen years old, was registered in the council records in Tilburg. He became a student at the King William II State High School, now the Paleis-Raadhuis (City Hall) which is the starting point of this cycle tour. This is where the young Vincent took his first real drawing lessons.

Vincent walked to school from his house. At that time he was boarding with the Hannik family at Korvel 57 (now Sint Annaplein 18-19), which is also known as Van Gogh Square. It is worth diverting from the route to visit this square which has a few nice references to Van Gogh. After that you can continue pedalling and enjoy the charming village of Alphen, various country estates and areas of woodland and heathland. You will feel like a real nature-lover here, just as Van Gogh did.

How does the Van Gogh cycle route work?
The Van Gogh cycle route forms part of the cycle route network in Brabant. There is a Van Gogh cycle route sign at every intersection. Follow the Van Gogh cycle route signs from one numbered intersection to the other. Follow the cycle route network signs between the intersections. Ten short routes in the form of loops have been marked out. The routes are joined together by linking sections.

  • Paleis-Raadhuis
The Paleis-Raadhuis in Tilburg is a former palace belonging to King Willem II of the Netherlands. Nowadays it forms part of Tilburg city hall. It was here in 1866 that the Hogere Burger School (Higher Civic School) was housed. In his first year here Vincent had drawing lessons from Constant Huijsmans. Vincent left the school prematurely in his second year for unknown reasons.
