  • Nazareth Convent
The congregation of Franciscan Sisters has had a great influence on healthcare and education. Originally the order was contemplative and the sisters concentrated mainly on prayer. At the end of the nineteenth century the sisters started working in healthcare and education. At the beginning of the twentieth century the building no longer suited the size and activities of the order. Architect Jan Stuyt had a remarkable style and was inspired by the Christian architecture of the Middle East. This is reflected in the current Nazareth Monastery. The monastery became a coat, an increasingly loose one. A number of buildings were used for housing, and a care facility moved in.
  • Koningshoeven Abbey
All La Trappe beers are developed and brewed at this abbey, in collaboration with the monks. Only beer that has been brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the supervision and responsibility of monks may bear the name 'Trappist beer'. Part of the proceeds of La Trappe beer sales goes to monasteries in Indonesia and Uganda, which originated from Koningshoeven. The Trappist monks have a strong connection with nature, which can be seen in their innovative and enterprising character. An ingenious water filtering system has been installed, for example. The monks hope to be climate neutral from 2025; a fitting ambition for an order that has traditionally always been able to respond to developments in society.
