Lecture by Bertien van Manen

Bertien van Manen is seen as one of the innovators of documentary photography.

She preferred to photograph ordinary people, often workers, in their daily lives. Before that, she often stayed in people's homes for long periods of time. In the Netherlands she photographed families of miners in Heerlen, among others. But she also photographed the daily lives of ordinary people in England, Ukraine, Russia, China and the United States. Her projects resulted in photo books.
