Animato Kwartet

'Four top players with effervescent energy, they grasp you from the very first note! [...] The great promise of the Dutch string quartets.' What is it about? About the Animato Quartet, which won the audience award of Dutch Classical Talent in 2022 and the Kammermusikpreis Kultur Gut Hasselburg in '23. It is only recently, that it also won the most important Dutch prize for classical chamber music talent: the Anton Kersjes Prize. The jury concluded: 'Layered, intense playing with a broad palette of colors.'

Coincidence? Benjamin Britten was 28 when he wrote his First Quartet, and so was Maurice Ravel when he completed his only quartet. It was Britten's first major work of chamber music and the last thing he wrote during his American period; the premiere was in Los Angeles. Controversy hung around Ravel's quartet. He sent the first movement to the Paris Conservatory composition competition but failed to win for the third time in a row, whereupon he was expelled. Fortunately, his colleague Debussy, whose quartet Ravel had kept aside when composing, thought very differently: 'In the name of the Music Gods and for my sake, don't change a note of what you have written.' Wise counsel. Ravel's loner became probably the most played string quartet of the 20th century.
