In 1920, twenty rural houses were built on a sand hill in Asten. That’s why St. Jozefplein is popularly called “d’n Bult.” The houses were designed by architect F. Wolters from Eindhoven. Despite their elevated position, the houses suffered no damage during World War II. As a gesture of gratitude, the residents financed a small St. Joseph chapel, for which artist Jac Maris from Heumen designed a relief. It was consecrated on April 18, 1953.
Residents reacted furiously when the housing association "Bergopwaarts" wanted to demolish the rental homes. Due to widespread protest across the square, the houses were instead renovated in their original style. The square and the 20 homes are a municipal monument.
