On the Ten Vorsel Estate in Bladel stands a remarkable, monumental beech tree: The Witch Tree, also known as The Witch Tree of Black Kaat (Zwarte Kaat). The tree dates back to around 1890 and is striking for its twisted branches and gnarled root system.

Once, the beech stood alone in the middle of the heath. When the area was cultivated and transformed into forestland in the early twentieth century, the tree was preserved and incorporated into a row of American oaks. Today, the Witch Tree has grown into a distinctive natural monument, nearly 18 meters tall, with a crown spread of over 20 meters and a trunk circumference exceeding three meters.

The tree owes its name to the legend of Black Kaat, the infamous gang leader who, according to a local tale from 1852, found her final resting place here. The tree’s eerie, twisted shape is said to echo her restless spirit.
