Leather Factory KVL
This former factory site has been transformed into a dynamic place to live, work, and spend time. With a beautiful residential area surrounding the historic buildings, KVL has grown into a unique hotspot where history and modern life come together. Art, culture, craftsmanship, and gastronomy meet in an impressive industrial setting.
On this site, you'll find the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Centre), where artists from around the world create ceramic art. It also houses the artisanal bakery and shop of Master Pastry Chef and Master Baker Robèrt van Beckhoven. In the former Ketelhuis (boiler house), you can see a 100-year-old working steam engine. For breakfast, lunch, or coffee with a treat, visit De Kazerne or Koffiemiep. The modern Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant Oisterwijk-Tilburg also offers overnight stays in a unique setting, with a breathtaking atrium that adds a special atmosphere.

The Rich History of KVL
In October 1916, Christ van der Aa founded the company NV LEDERFABRIEK OISTERWIJK, which was taken over in 1920 by Adler and Oppenheimer. From the building now home to the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC), the factory grew to become the largest leather factory in Europe. At its peak, 25,000 hides were tanned daily on an 11-hectare site. The work was heavy and dirty, but the social facilities were exceptional for the time: its own sports club, first aid station, social worker, and factory fire brigade. The factory closed its doors in the year 2000 due to increasing competition from low-wage countries. Almijstraat was named in 1927 after the Amsterdam Leather Company (Almij), which acquired a major share of the factory in 1924. In 1974, the name Koninklijke Lederfabrieken Oisterwijk (Royal Leather Factories Oisterwijk) (KLO) was changed to Royal United Leather, Koninklijke Verenigde Leder (KVL). This name remained as a lasting memory associated with the site.
