Programme
Welcome in the Peelreus tasting room for a historical film screening about peat cutters. Images from the past bring history to life. In the film, you will see peat cutters at work in the De Bult peat bog.
An enthusiastic tourist guide, who is also a “peat cutter”, will then take you to the peat field in the forest. Here you can see how peat was traditionally cut. Using original tools, such as a bonkschop, stikker and oplegger, the peat cutter demonstrates the craft of the peat workers of yesteryear. The old peat press that you saw earlier in the film can also be viewed here in real life. We take a look at the very simple dwelling of the former peat cutters, the Plaggenhut, located on the peat field.
After the demonstration, we walk along the old Berkenbomenpad to the foundations of the Deurne peat litter factory. There, we hear a brief explanation about the canals and their unique history. We conclude with a fun anecdote from times gone by!
