Mill 'the Oostenwind'
This post mill was rebuilt following a fire; the central post still dates from 1506.
On the Molenweg stands a remarkable piece of heritage: the windmill dating back to 1506. Only one authentic part of the original structure remains: the mast, the large beam on which the upper house rotates. Over the centuries, the mill has been through a great deal. In 1711, it was blown over during an exceptional storm, and in 1970 it was destroyed by fire. Yet it has risen again each time. The last time, it was rebuilt on a mound in 1975.
For centuries, the mill was owned by the Lord or Lady of Asten. In those days, farmers were obliged to have their grain ground here. Anyone who failed to do so was fined. The miller’s trade was often passed down from generation to generation. Well-known miller families include the Hoefnagels, Loomans, Holten and Van Stekelenburg.

In 1953, the mill came into the possession of the Van Stekelenburg family. On the occasion of its 500th anniversary, it was finally given a name: the Oostenwind. Today, the mill is a listed building, still featuring the mast dating from 1506. The miller is happy to welcome visitors and enjoys telling them about this unique, centuries-old machine that has been a hallmark of Asten for so long.
