At least sixteen pilots lost their lives in plane crashes in the immediate vicinity of Asten. For example, on February 7, 1945, two Halifaxes crashed simultaneously in a double crash. The bomb load on one of the aircraft exploded, causing a massive blast; of the three crew members who perished in that aircraft, two bodies were never recovered. An oak memorial cross was erected in their honor.
