In the Grevenbroekmuseum, visitors are guided thru many centuries of the history of the Hamont-Achel region. From the earliest times to the last world war. This is done thru authentic and unique objects, models, maps, prints, drawings, paintings, films, and brochures. It is the story of the people who inhabited this region, both past and present.
Come and see the exhibition about the 1950s and 1960s! These include: the reconstruction after the war years, the rise in prosperity and the optimism of progress, but also the Cold War and the arms race. The Simonshuis, which houses the museum, was built by the Simons family of traders in 1883 and has a fascinating history. In 1913, director Frans Schellens bought the villa and established the weaving mill Tissage de Velours here. From October 1944 to April 1945, the villa and the surrounding park served as the headquarters of General Dempsey, commander of the Second British Army.
