As the name might suggest, the Essche Stream is named after the Brabant village of Esch. This brook originates in Oisterwijk and flows into the Dommel after about twelve kilometers. The Essche Stream therefore falls under the management of the Dommel Water Board.
The valley of the Essche Stream has long been the focus of a project aimed at restoring the brook’s natural course. This gives more space to water and nature.
History
In the past, many hides were cleaned in local streams and ponds during the leather tanning process, causing pollution and foul odors. The Essche Stroom was also polluted during the heyday of the manufacturing industry—not only by the leather industry in Oisterwijk but also by the textile industry in Tilburg. Today, the Essche Stroom runs much cleaner.
