Exhibition: The Fallen Garden

Art Platform Het Oude Raadhuis presents 'De Omgevallen Tuin' by visual artist Igor Zevenbergen. In this exhibition, Zevenbergen displays a cohesive oeuvre of paintings and objects in which memory, nature, language, and imagination meet.

Zevenbergen has his artistic roots in Deurne. He was part of the artists' circle surrounding figures such as Gerrit van Bakel and Willy Martinali in Deurne. In addition to his work as a visual artist, he was a Dutch teacher for many years; nowadays, he teaches Dutch as a second language. His interest in language and literature is palpable in his work, without dominating it.

The exhibition consists of paintings and large objects made primarily from natural materials such as wood, leather, and cheesecloth. The works are grouped around a theme. Together, they form a unity that reveals the background behind the creation of the work. The title 'De Omgevallen Tuin' refers to one of Zevenbergen's earliest childhood memories: his grandparents' garden, where, as a small child, he suddenly realized that everything eventually passes. That sense of wonder regarding time, memory, and transience resonates throughout his work. Series such as Le Sacre du Printemps and Una Historica are also included in the exhibition. Although his work often originates from a theme, Zevenbergen prefers to leave the meaning open. Ultimately, the work must primarily speak for itself.
