IVN Laarbeek is holding a public walk through the historic landscape of Het Laar. The walk starts at the Laar bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal. This canal was dug between 1916 and 1923 and cut through a large agricultural area containing several farms with names such as De Hel, Het Vagevuur and the hamlet De Hemel. Het Vagevuur still exists and has been monumentally restored into a luxury holiday home for people with dementia. Through the area flows the Goorloop, which dips under the canal and runs past the Bavaria site. There, there is a bank swallow wall with dozens of nesting holes, built in cooperation with the IVN Bird Working Group. The small nature reserve opposite is the Stater. The Goorloop passes under the N615 here, towards the Lieshoutse Beemden. The route continues through Buurtschap Groenewoud, named after a former inn, follows the Rijakkerweg to the Reijbroeken, which can be a swampy area. The trail passes by farm and coffee house De Goeikamer with a day care centre for adolescents and young adults with care needs. From there, it heads towards starting point the Laarbrug.
It is a varied walk-through of over 4 km. IVN guides tell you about the history and nature of this area.
