Debussy's La Mer, Rautavaara's Violin Concerto and Cantus Arcticus
In Finland, people know better than anyone just how harsh and bleak winter can be. Indeed, the serene silence of the winter landscape has long been a source of inspiration for composers. Isolated from the outside world, music of haunting beauty emerges.
In Finland, people know better than anyone just how harsh and bleak winter can be. Indeed, the serene silence of the winter landscape has long been a source of inspiration for composers. Isolated from the outside world, music of haunting beauty emerges. Philzuid pays tribute to Finnish and French composers who were captivated by the power and beauty of nature. Central to the program is the work of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, whose music sought the healing power of nature and a spiritual connection between the divine and the earthly. In Cantus Arcticus, he creates a unique fusion of Finnish bird calls and orchestral sounds. His atmospheric Violin Concerto is a true tour de force for soloist Tobias Feldmann, the young German violin star. Claude Debussy, too, possessed an unparalleled ability to capture nature in music; in La Mer, he uses refined orchestral textures to paint the sea in all its moods. It is a musical journey where nature, silence, and imagination converge.
