Guided tour with Danielle Lemaire – June 21st | Museum W

On Sunday, June 21 at 2:00 PM, artist Danielle Lemaire will lead a special guided tour of the exhibition *De geschiedenis is mijn gezelschap* (History is my company) at Museum W.

During this artist tour, Lemaire will take you on her artistic journey of discovery into former life in the Dutch East Indies. Her family history takes center stage in this. She draws inspiration from historical archival material from the colonial period, as well as personal memories and diary excerpts from her ancestors. In this way, she combines diverse themes such as religion, spirituality, colonialism, and melancholy in her work into a single layered and poetic image.

Her Indonesian background runs like a common thread through the work of Danielle Lemaire. References to Indonesia and the Dutch East Indies appear in her figurative, magical, and often surreal drawings and paintings. Nature and spirituality play an important role in this, as do colonial history and the complex relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

About the artist
Danielle Lemaire (1967) has been active as a multimedia artist for over thirty years. She creates paintings, drawings, installations, tapestries, sculptures, films, and audio works. Lemaire studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg. Her work has previously been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Breda, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and the Missiemuseum Steyl. She has also exhibited abroad, including a solo exhibition in Paris and group exhibitions in Japan, China, and Indonesia.
