Lecture: ‘The odd one out’
Hans van den Broek will give a lecture entitled "One Odd One Out."
Hans van den Broek will give a lecture entitled "One Odd One Out."
The lecture will focus on naming children in earlier centuries in his own region in the south of the Netherlands, but also throughout Europe.
Those who research genealogy have surely noticed the custom of naming the seventh child, and especially the seventh son, Louis. This custom is linked to the name Lodewijk. If the custom becomes somewhat diluted, the seventh child, not necessarily the seventh son, is sometimes called Louis. Later, girls are sometimes called Louise. Ultimately, it turns out that this custom is known throughout Europe. Van den Broek will also discuss other naming customs. For example, a child was named after a specific saint to prevent illness. He has also studied the extensive possibilities for naming foundlings. The lecture is free and open to everyone, including non-members of the Heemkundekring (Heemkunde Society).
