If you are visiting the charming and picturesque walled town of Heusden as a dog-lover, a visit to Brouwcafé Kareltje (Kareltje Brewery Café) will probably be the highlight of your day. Not only is the café named after the landlord’s dog, but dogs and their owners flock to Kareltje from far and wide for the special dogs’ menu: “Took us three quarters on an hour with the dog to get here to celebrate his birthday, he feasted himself on the dogs’ menu.” In addition to dog lovers, fans come here for special beers, liqueurs and jenever (Dutch gin), with three home-brewed draught beers, nine home-made liqueurs and no fewer than 26 self-distilled jenevers.

“A super cafe in the country’s loveliest village”
You will find plenty of art, culture and history lovers in Heusden while wandering through the picturesque alleyways and past centuries’ old buildings. But you’ll also find good food and drink. Kareltje is renowned for its giant toasties (with a choice of thirteen fillings!) and it organises a large antique and second-hand market on the square in front of the café on the first Saturday of each month. Large outdoor performances take place here on the last Sunday of the month from March to October. Come and enjoy how the music sounds between the well restored centuries’ old buildings; something that makes this attractive town even more distinctive.

Distinctively hospitable
And what could be better than to enjoy a craft brew, maybe on the large (heated) terrace? Or admire the wonderful interior where you can order music through the juke box app. You’ll see at once why Kareltje Brewery Café is included in the top 100 café’s from the Dutch catering organisation Misset Horeca. You can tell that for many people this café has won a place in their heart from this loving reaction in the guest book: “We’ve come here to arrange our wedding because it’s here that we first met and had our first kiss.
