Stay overnight in one of the 35 abbey hotel rooms and enjoy the garden in the summer months and De Blauwe Pauw restaurant conservatory in the winter months, while the children enjoy themselves on the play equipment in the playground. Moreover, a stay at the Volksabdij abbey – in the wooded surroundings of Ossendrecht and close to the Kalmthoutse Heide and the Brabantse Wal – is not complete until you have sampled at least one of the three abbey beers. Delicious after a lovely walk or bike trip from the abbey: West Brabant’s leading tourist departure point.

Starting point
Officially known as Brabant’s nature gateway, the Volksabdij abbey is the recreational entry point to De Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide border park. This makes it the perfect starting point for walkers and cyclists to get out into the countryside. The 40 hectare private wood is undulating with winding pathways and ponds in an English style. Come and see it at sunrise (breakfast is served from 6 in the morning!) and get an uninterrupted view of the deer, foxes and various birds of prey.

Nature gateway
The abbey is connected to the Brabant walking and cycling network as a nature gateway. Four cycle routes specially mapped out by the abbey vary from border-hopping to a strenuous 50 kilometres. Various footpaths lead out from the Volksabdij abbey along the Brabantse Wal and the border park. Many of these routes join up so you can spend several hours in the beautiful countryside. Ask for a packed breakfast or lunch at the restaurant and set off.

A place for everyone
De Volksabdij abbey offers various packages with different themes, for example the Liberation Route. Did you know that the Brabantse Wal was a strategically important line of defence in the Second World War, and that the multilingual hotel staff at the abbey can tell you many interesting facts about this period? Both in the present and in the past, the abbey always has been 'a place for everyone’.
