Metjak plays music from the Mashriq and Magreb regions, roughly from the Persian Gulf to Casablanca, with no distinction between popular and classical genres. Surprising rhythms – always danceable – and hypnotic melodies – often based on ancient poetry – are key features of the repertoire. Oud player (and initiator) Theo van den Hurk, bass guitarist Pierre America, and bass clarinetist/clarinetist John Thomas (also on Persian frame drum) playfully color this music with folk, rock, jazz, and Afro-Latin elements.
