Puccini's heartbreaking tragedy is about a young geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer.
When young geisha Cio-Cio-San marries US naval officer Pinkerton, she thinks she's entering into a real, binding marriage for life. She renounces her religion and community and unfortunately understands too late that for Pinkerton their marriage is only an illusion - with tragic consequences. Giacomo Puccini's opera, with a score that includes Butterfly's aria: 'Un bel dì, vedremo' ('On a fine day') and the 'Humming chorus', is compelling, with a heartbreaking ending. Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's stunning production is inspired by 19th-century European depictions of Japan. Asmik Grigorian plays the role of Cio-Cio-San, and Kevin John Edusei conducts.
