Lucas Gassel, master of the landscape
In the spring of 2020 Helmond, in the south of the Netherlands near Eindhoven, marks the 450th death anniversary of master painter Lucas Gassel. The unique exhibition Lucas Gassel van Helmond, Master of the Landscape, together with an attractive programme of activities in the city, offers visitors a glimpse into the world of this 16th-century master.

Penetrating the landscape
Lucas Gassel was born and raised in Helmond. As the son of a painter, he grew up with brush and palette. In the sixteenth century Gassel was a well-known and successful painter and draughtsman. As was usual at that time he painted on wooden panels. In the foreground Lucas often painted a Biblical story, while in the distance he depicted a vast and mountainous landscape. Over time his landscapes took up more and more space and were alternately populated with farms, villages, castles, palace gardens, farmers, travellers, animals, and rivers with ships.

Little is known about his life. Lucas probably left for Antwerp shortly after the beginning of the sixteenth century. At that time Antwerp was an important centre of art in the south of the Duchy of Brabant of which Helmond was a part. In that inspiring environment he found kindred spirits. He felt at home in the Antwerp School. There, and later in Brussels, he developed his talent as a landscape painter. Gassel was the first landscape painter from Dutch soil to put the landscape centre stage. He contributed to the change in the approach to landscape painting that can be seen in works from that era.

The exhibition Lucas Gassel of Helmond, Master of the Landscape (10 March - 7 June 2020) brings works of art from all over the world to Helmond for the first retrospective ever of this master. The loans for the exhibition come from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Spain, the United States and Mexico.

Ode to the master
The exhibition about Lucas Gassel is not the only thing happening in Helmond to honour this great man. A foundation of prominent residents has been established in Helmond and the surrounding area which has as its goal that the beautiful and high-quality works of Gassel, as well as his person, get the attention and recognition they deserve. Helmond rightly honours the works of this fellow townsman who died some 450 years ago in Brussels with an extensive programme of activities for young and old during the exhibition period. Before or after a museum visit, visitors can follow in Gassels' footsteps during a city walk. A real experience route leads them past cultural sights ranging from graffiti to archaeological finds, 3D soundscapes or artistic viewing boxes and concerts.
